NWT’s The Sun at Midnight actor wins award

Yellowknife’s Kirsten Carthew on the set of The Sun at Midnight, a Canadian film which she directed, wrote, and produced. (submitted)

“… The first full-length feature film shot in the N.W.T. is quickly becoming a celebrated selection at some major Canadian film festivals.
Mohawk-actor Kawennárhere Devery Jacobs won the award for best performance in a Canadian film at the Whistler Film Festival on Sunday for her performance in The Sun at Midnight.
“I’m just filled with gratitude,” said Jacobs in an interview Tuesday. “I had no expectations going to shoot it in the Northwest Territories. We just went to film this ultra low-budget project, and it was such a passion project that I really hold dear to my heart.” […]
It’s the first acting award Jacobs has received, and she credits Carthew’s talent for the win.
“It’s all because of our writer-director [#Yellowknife’s] Kirsten Carthew. Her writing, if you look at the film, there really isn’t a lot of plot-driven stories, so it really rests on the shoulders of myself and [co-star] Duane Howard to carry the film, which I haven’t’ had the opportunity to do in past projects.” […]
The Whistler Film Festival marks the film’s second screening outside the N.W.T.
The Sun at Midnight also screened at imagineNATIVE in October, complete with a standing ovation from the audience.…”

“Everyone is waking up”: Tanya Tagaq on fighting for justice and singing for Björk

“….Protest music has found an avant-garde champion in the formidable grunts and howls of Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq. April Clare Welsh finds out how the First Nations activist and Björk collaborator is using her platform to shine a light on Canada’s dark history […]Tagaq believes that online activism like the virtual mob that flocked to Standing Rock has become “absolutely crucial” in the global fight for Indigenous rights. “Indigenous people have been fighting for the planet for a very, very long time,” she says, “but everyone is waking up to it now. You see these elders engaging in peaceful protests and getting pepper-sprayed by billionaire companies that just want more money – in 2016 that’s just unacceptable. Too many people are awake to accept that behaviour.”[…] Tagaq herself is a survivor of Canada’s notorious Residential School System, a forced assimilation programme which operated from the late 19th century right until 1996, taking Indigenous children away from their communities and placing them in boarding schools around the country. Around 6,000 students died during the residential schools’ existence, and sexual and physical abuse was endemic – though Tagaq emphasises that she doesn’t carry personal pain from her time at high school: “I wouldn’t want to take anything away from the people who suffered the massive indignities themselves.”….”

“…The Con Mine (1938-2003) was the first gold mine developed in the Northwest Territories, just south of Yellowknife.[1] The property was staked by Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada (Cominco) in September 1935 in response to the discovery of visible gold nearby; the name “Con” is an abbreviation of “Consolidated”. The advent of winter prevented any prospecting from being conducted, but work in the summer of 1936 led to the discovery of numerous gold veins. The Con Mine entered production in 1938 and ceased operations in 2003. It has produced over 5,000,000 ozt (160,000 kg) of gold from 12,195,585 tons of ore processed.[2] The mine was over 6,000 ft (1,800 m) deep.[3]…”

“…Did a migrant document his journey to Europe on Instagram? Did a young Syrian boy save a friend from danger under a hail of bullets? Did a pair of magicians pull off the ultimate photobomb by performing a trick in the background of a news report outside the Houses of Parliament?
The answer to all of these questions is — as great as the stories are — an unequivocal no. Did large, revered news organisations fall for the hoaxes? Unfortunately, yes. http://bit.ly/2aMUgD5 …”

Julian Schuman Memorial Service @ China Daily Beijing, P.R.C. May 05, 1995

“… Julian Schuman Published 4:00 am, Wednesday, May 10 , 1995
Funeral services were held in Beijing for Julian Schuman, the last American correspondent to leave Shanghai after the takeover of the city by Mao Zedong. He died April 1 at Capital Hospital after several years in a coma resulting from a massive stroke and was interred at the Cemetery for Revolutionary Martyrs. He was 74.
Mr. Schuman was born in Boston and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. He studied the Chinese language at Harvard as a GI during World War II, and later, on the GI Bill, at Yale. He sailed to China in 1947 and worked for a Chinese daily newspaper, doing radio broadcasts as well for ABC out of Shanghai.
He worked for the China Weekly Review in Shanghai with publishers Bill and Sylvia Powell, returning to the United States after its closure at the height of the McCarthy era. In 1956, he and the Powells were indicted for sedition; the charge was dropped in 1961.
In 1963, Mr. Schuman returned to China. He worked for the government-run Foreign Language Press for 14 years. From 1980 until the fall of 1993, he worked for the English-language China Daily.
He is survived by three stepchildren, Jonathan Zaktin, of Beijing, and Jeremy and Tanya Zaktin, of San Francisco and Marin County, respectively…..”

Writer alleged U.S. used germ warfare in Korean War
“…In the mid-1950s, as part of the widespread red hysteria fed by Sen. Joseph McCarthy, a Republican from Wisconsin, Mr. Powell was publicly accused of “unspeakable betrayal of America’s cause in the Far East.” On April 25, 1956, he and his wife, Sylvia, and a Review editor named Julian Schuman were indicted by a federal grand jury in San Francisco on charges of sedition, allegations that could have put him in prison for 220 years….”
