CBC North’s annual visit to students at Nunavut Sivuniksavut college in Ottawa took place on February 21 and 22, 2013. About 20 students took part in media workshops at Algonquin College. The two-day television and radio courses provide a glimpse of what it’s like to work in the media.

First year students learn how to interview, write news stories, shoot for television and edit. They try their hand at reading radio newscasts, and hosting radio programs. They also shoot and edit short TV stories (see the videos on the left)…they have 3 hours to write, shoot and edit the stories, so it’s impressive what they came up with.

Students in the media program at Algonquin College volunteer their time to help with the workshops. Journalist Joanna Awa from CBC Iqaluit talked about working at CBC in the North. Lucy van Oldenbarneveld, host of the CBC TV supper hour news in Ottawa, also gave a workshop for the students.
