Google, US book publishers settle digital copyright tussle; legal battle with authors drags on | Washington Post

See on Scoop.itMediaMentor

Google and major book publishers have settled a lengthy legal battle over digital copyrights, but a bigger dispute still looms with thousands of authors who allege that Google is illegally profiting from their works.

The truce announced Thursday ends a federal lawsuit filed in 2005 by several members of the Association of American Publishers after Google Inc. began stockpiling its Internet search index with digital duplicates of books scanned from libraries.

Apple Inc.’s iPhone 5 won the backing of Consumer Reports, whose criticism of an earlier model became known as “Antennagate” and who said the latest device is among the best on the market despite its map flaws.

Google has maintained that its scanning is covered by fair-use provisions of copyright law, although it offered to remove specific books from its index upon request. It also showed only snippets of the copyrighted books unless permission was given to show more.

Publishers and authors, however, insisted that Google needed explicit permission from them before making the digital copies, let alone showing even snippets of text from the books on Google’s website.

Idle No More – Denendeh #J11 Global Day of Action – Yellowknife

To demonstrate support for the rising global Indigenous Peoples Movement, people of Denendeh took action in Yellowknife to run parallel to the meeting between PM Harper and the AFN.

The goal was to raise the profile of the movement, demonstrate a global presence, and give visibility to the growing momentum as a peoples’ movement first.

As only a few AFN-determined representatives will be chosen to participate in the meeting with Harper, it will be important to show the rest of the movement stands united with one voice. Idle No More is not going anywhere, and demonstrates the strength and resurgence of our nations.

January 11 Global Day of Action also honours Chief Theresa Spence, marking the 1-month anniversary of her hunger strike. As well, #J11 honours the other chiefs and elders who have been on hunger strike with Chief Spence.

All nations and all people from around the world are invited to join in celebrating and affirming their support for what is happening and the need to keep things moving forward together.

These are the five points Idle No More Denendeh wanted to see addressed at the January 11th meeting with the AFN Chiefs and the Prime Minister:

1) We feel that Chief Spence should be present and central at the January 11 meeting.

2) Request that all elected leadership should consult with INM organizers prior to the meeting to get our input.

3) Request that the meeting be webcast live to ensure accountability and transparency.

4) Demand that the recent legislation be revoked and that the Harper government meet it’s duty to consult with all First Nations, standing in solidarity with the Mikisew Cree and the Frog Lake First Nations who are challenging the government over Bills C-38 and C-45.

5) The federal government meet its duty to consult regarding the proposed super board, which is a violation of negotiated agreements.

“…I have been dissatisfied with what is going on in the country for a while but the Idle No More movement is what inspired me to write. First, it pains me to see, how we as humans have mistreated other humans for such a long time. Racism is so prevalent in Canada and I feel like through my life I have seen the government do its best to push First Nations People down to an inferior level. From taking funds from educational and health programs to pumping money into jails, and now this? Bill C-45: Jobs and Growth Act, Bill S-2: Family Homes on Reserve and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act, First Nation Education Act, Bill: S-212: An Act to Amend the Interpretation Act, Bill S-8: Safe Drinking Water for First Nations, Bill C-428: Indian Act Amendment and Replacement Act and Bill C-27: First Nations Financial Transparency Act. I do not know as much about these bills as I would like to, but it appears to me that the goal of these bills and others like them is to take away First Nations freedom to govern themselves and their land. The treaty right to education is violated, First Nations forced to open up business and financial information for the public, First Nations lawmaking is denied, etc, etc! All of these things are mistreatments of human beings and we have been doing things like this to First Nations People for hundreds of years! …”

Interesting.. one wonders why the city is doing this and how much it costs? "..a vibrant, exciting and cool place to live, shop, eat and enjoy…" Really? all the reports I read say there too many closed stores because merchants are moveing out to the "suburbs"and nobody wants to live there because of the high cost, violence and drunks…
