Organized by federal Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield, the campaign comes at a time the worldwide market for seal products is evaporating. The pinks will be made from seal fur and will be available inside the House of Commons. “Sealing is an important economic and cultural driver in Canada’s eastern, Arctic and northern communities,” the New Brunswick MP said in a statement. “It is a long-standing and integral part of Canada’s rural culture and a way of life for thousands of Canadians.” The pins were provided by the government of Nunavut and the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association. Newfoundland and Labrador’s Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Darin King appeared on CTV’s Power Play wearing a seal fur coat. “It’s expensive, but it’s worth it,” he told CTV’s Don Martin of his coat. “The sealing industry is very important to our province, particularly our rural communities.” King said in a good year, up to 35 per cent of a fisherman’s income can be from the seal hunt.
